Iceland Update

The forthcoming trip to Iceland is getting closer and we need to start capturing information for our tour organisers. You should have had a consent form from your section leader to fill in (a copy is available to download below in case you haven't) Providing this information will allow the tour company to book the flights for us. We also need the second payment from you soon too if you haven't already paid. The second payment is £100. I hope you're getting excited. We are!

The Scouts have been to the Flowrider - and Space!

UK Space agency Sc Astronautics 2015Over the past two weeks we have been taking ten Scouts at a time to the Flowrider at Heworth Leisure Centre.

The Scouts left back at HQ have been working on the Astronautics badge. Yes there really is a badge all about space exploration.

Scouts have been learning all about how meteorites strike the Earth and making their own lunar landers. Next week they will be launching model rockets while the last remaining Scouts head out to get wet. Mr Lloyd has enjoyed taking pictures since he hasn't been allowed to have a go himself. He noticed that most poeple either do looks of extreme concentration - with their tongue sticking out for extra balance, or the popeye look - one eye closed. Some even did both! Either way it was described as "awesome" by the Scouts.

Something Special For Our Upcoming Centenary? Open to our older Cubs, Scouts & Explorers

Screen Shot 2015 10 19 at 22.08.15

Some of you may be aware that 2016 is the Group’s centenary year.

Because of this we have been talking about organising something special to mark the occasion and wanted to look at doing something that we haven’t offered before and are unlikely to offer again.

Invitation to the official launch meeting 8:45 Friday 22nd January & second chance to express an interest

Recently we sent out a letter explaining that 2016 is the Group’s centenary year. In the letter we floated the idea of a trip to Iceland. We have excellent news. With 23 Scouts, Leaders & Parents expressing an interest in the trip, and with the company agreeing to honour their initial price, the trip can now go ahead on the 21st-25th August.

Naturally now that the trip is viable we wanted to give those of you who didn’t sign up a second chance, as well as inviting those of you who did to a launch meeting.  The trip, organised by Venture Abroad, is open to Scouts, Explorers and older Cubs. We’re happy for Parents to attend too. We chose Iceland because it is an amazing country, with much of it’s popularity being due to its array of natural features, which include glaciers, hot springs, geysers, active volcanoes, impressive peaks and vast lava deserts. We have planned an itinerary that takes in the very best that it has to offer. Our base during the trip will be Úlfljótsvatn Scout Centre so there is plenty of potential for meeting Scouts from other countries too.

Summer Camp Video is Live

We didn't take a lot of pictures at camp this year - instead we made a video.

Taking inspiration from The Script's "Hall of Fame", it was on the minibus playist on the way over, we used a drone, two GoPros and a phone to capture this.

It gives you a bit of an insight into the activities we get up to at camp and since most of it was edited at camp struck us how much technology has moved on since we made our first Summer Camp video in the 90s.

Watch out for the time lapse of setting up the site. It took quite a bit longer than it appears.

If we can find the original Summer Camp video - who knows maybe we'll have a re-release for the centenary. There are a few familiar faces in the original film some grew up to be the leaders ;-)
