Making Posters to raise awareness

Last night was a craft night, the activities were to make a poster advertising an event. The challenge was to make it as eye catching as possible and to include all the relevant information. We gave an added incentive of a prize for the most imaginative and interesting. There were two topics for the poster making; one was to advertise our Diamond Jubilee Street Party night were everyone can take part including parents and siblings, the other was to advertise our Sponsored Water Walk to raise funds and awareness for Oxfam Water Week. which is taking place on Saturday 2 June at 10am on the field adjacent to our HQ. The results of the poster making were fantastic and the cubs really have entered into the challenge by making the posters interesting to look at, eye catching and even interactive as on one of the posters there is a lift the flap section.They all did a excellent job, the two winners were chosen by my parent helpers, it was a tough job but someone had to do it ha ha. The wining posters (one in each category) were placed in the notice board in the hall, the rest of the pictures were placed around our HQ for everyone to enjoy. Dino Burgers

We have a bit of a theme going on with dinosaurs, I dunno, it’s just a bit of fun. Last week was Design a Dinosaur, with the cubs making their own fabulously weird and wonderful versions of dinosaurs, unfortunately I didn’t get any pics. This week, as the title suggests, we were making Dinosaur Burgers. It was a bit of a messy job and some of the cubs didn’t like the feel of the mixture but it was good fun and most of them got stuck in, it took about 15 mins to cook them but some were a bit thick so took a bit longer. It was a really good programme though. I didn’t manage to get a burger as the cubs scoffed the lot, although my explorer got one that he made himself (the safest option I think), he said they were delicious. The reciepe couldn’t have been any simpler either, basically all it had in was minced beef, egg and chilli powder, so reasonably healthy. A few of the cubs commented last night on how much they liked cubs because they get to”cook stuff”, I have a group of budding chefs I think, take a look at the pics

Cubs Easter Weekend

Had a fantastic weekend with the cubs doing all sorts of fun stuff, had loads of adventures. There were a few new people at this pack weekend and it was really nice to see the younger members joining in. Everyone behaved admirably all weekend and I was very proud of all of them for trying things that scared them and challenged them, well done cubs. A bid THANK YOU goes to everyone who helped out over the weekend too, if it wasn’t for the help of parents or grandparents we wouldn’t be able to provide their children with these great opportunities, we have a very small leadership team at 1st Washington so all help is much appreciated.

We cooked food from four countries tonight to go towards our global challenge badge and the chef’s badge, really successful night and all the cubs were fantastic and joined in with enthusiasm. We made Chicken Chow Mien, Spaghetti Bolognaise, Shepherds Pie and Spanish Omelette. I think all of the cubs ate their own and other groups food, the Chow Mein seemed to go down very well as did the Spag Bol, the parents were even brave enough to try some although not many would take the plunge! Our Explorers were quite keen and wasted no time in sampling the cubs efforts with gusto too ha! Needless to say they didn’t need any tea when they got home. Check out the photos.

Explorers feed 4 for £10

This is challenge month where every week the unit get issued a challenge for the coming week. This week’s challenge is to feed four people for £10. A variety of recipes were used from Chinese to Italian.
We seem to be going for the record for number of Explorers in a kitchen.

Check out the really bizarre Chinese dessert it looks amazing but tastes like plasticene. To finish it off we had wun. Small jelly hearts that tasted like mould. Nomnom.

Pancakes, pancakes and more pancakes

As the title suggests, it was pancake night. I’m sure all of the cubs had already had pancakes during the day but they got the chance to make their own last night, some were fantastic and some looked awful, some cubs just had one, other cubs had 6. There was pancakes with just sugar, pancakes with sugar and lemon, pancakes with jam, then there were the extremists who had pancakes with every topping; sugar, golden syrup, jam, lemon juice, strawberry sauce and choc sauce ,yes all together yuck! The cubs made some wonderful concoctions and there was virtually none wasted which was good. The cubs even did their own washing up and tidying, well done you lot, I hope your mums see the pictures of you doing the dishes. We had a few Beavers join us last night so I hope they enjoyed the evening.

Cubs at Pets at Home

Well this week was a split night again due to fencing, which is going very well.I took 12 cubs to Pets at Home in Washington and we had a very interesting visit. The cubs learned all about small animals such as guinea pigs and rabbits and even had the opportunity to pet some of the furry creatures, for those of us who don’t have any small furry critters at home it was a great chance to get up close and personal. When we went to look at the fish we did learn a few interesting facts about feeding, I have learnt that I am feeding my goldfish too much so now they are getting the right size portion, we also discovered a huge white fish swimming upside down, apparently it was on a diet as it had been overfed, poor thing, it looked a bit distressed. The cubs were very interested in the lizards also and there were quite a few little lizards and ghekos in the tanks, they were quite cute but I wasn’t too keen on their food as it was making quite a lot of noise. I will be back in a couple of weeks with the rest of the cubs so hopefully they will have a good visit too.

Electronic Games Night

We had a different kind of night on Tuesday as it all involved kids playing games on electronic devices. It was really good. I was a bit worried they might have been bored or that everyone wouldn’t get a turn but they all seemed to enjoy the night. Everyone brought in their gadgets which was miraculous and we had two WII’s on the go with 4 controllers each, I think Mario Kart was on one and Mario Olympic games was on the other also the computers were all on in the office (after we managed to get them untangled and tidied up) so there were four at a time in there playing an on-line racing game. I had a report back from a beaver who joined us that night and he had a fantastic night! Brilliant fun and the leaders even managed to grab a cup of tea, a rarity indeed.
